Salim Kemal and Ivan Gaskell: Contesting the Arts:Politics and Aesthetics
QUOTES:
- “The artwork is a knowing” de Bolla.
Why this quote?
Cause it reminds me that Knowing and Knowledge are two different things and especially in connection to the artwork. Knowledge implicates an intellectual process in order to understand something. Knowing implicates an emotional process. Knowledge is about a facts, events, education, reasoning, cognitive process. Knowing is about intuition, sensations, awareness. I believe that an artwork doens’t comunicate what “reality” is according to its creator, but offers you a different way to experience what “reality” is for yourself.
- “Anger is one of the sinews of the soul”. Thomas Fuller.
Why this quote?
Anger is inside
Anger is outside
Anger is there
Anger is here
Anger is everywhere even if you can’t see her.
Anger isn’t right
Anger isn’t wrong
Anger is more than anger
Anger is just anger
Anger is revolution
Anger is energy
Anger can live in symbiosis with the peace through the art
Anger is the other face of calmness.
Anger can transform
Anger can destroy
Anger can create
Can you imagine a life without anger? Liar…then you are not an artist.

SUMMARY/Notes
The article deals with the three concepts of Politics, Aesthetics and Art and the different ways of connection, overlaps and interaction among them. offers a a general description of the book´s chapters where different authors in relation to these 3 concepts examine :
- issues of alterity and identity and strategies dealing with the self and Other in terms of ethnicity, class or subject (A. Pagden, D. Carroll, D. Cottom, N. Mc William.
- issues of nation, colonialization and how dealt with Other , class and gender (Pagden)
- political nature of objects that modernism revers for pereceived qualities. like unity and disinderestedness ( de Bolla, M. Kelly)
- alterity as being within communities (Caroll): The immage of the people is the repression of the alterity that actuallz constitutes it->this image is fractured and incomplete.
- “affective response” . Identification of the aesthetic aspect of the work in its relation to the afective response. “Something is known to us in aesthetic experience which is not available to us as knowledge in other forms of experience.”. “The art is a knowing”. (Peter de Bolla)
- Anger. “Anger is one of the sinews of the soul” (Fuller Thomas) and we must learn to harness it both effectively and justly. Theory of Anger: Prevalent element whenever politics, aesthetics and arts are discussed.
There is a symbiosis between politics and aesthetics, cause they cannot alone offet an explanation about human creativity, about Self and Other.
